Wildlife Encounters: Electrofishing
October 3, 2023 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm
FREEJoin us at the fishing pond at Gardner Camp on Tuesday, October 3rd for an exciting demonstration of Electrofishing and fish tagging. During the activity, we will be able to monitor the health and well-being of our fish. The fish will be tagged, measured and weighed then released back into the pond to be caught another day. This exciting survey method will be a great addition to our fishing programs and educational resource to study over time. Our Fisheries Biologist will identify the overall habitat and water quality of the pond, explain how we monitor species and fish populations, observe predator to prey ratio and calculate relative weights along with inspecting fish for signs of disease. Attendees will get their hands wet by releasing the tagged fish back into the pond after they have been tagged and recorded.
What is Electrofishing?
Electrofishing utilizes a specialized boat operated by Fisheries Biologist Blake Ruebish to introduce an electric charge into our pond. This charge temporarily stuns fish, which are then collected, analyzed, and returned back to their home—safely. Electrofishing does not harm our fish in any way. Electrofishing allows IDNR fisheries biologist the ability to create a perfect management plan for our pond.
